River Cottage Community - The great pancake race

Last night was the perfect opportunity for our young scouts to get some practice in. Cooking pancakes on trangia stoves and teaching the newer members of the section how to do it has always been a feature of the night before Shrove Tuesday. Sadly last night was different, not least because of the fact that it's been necessary to ban pancakes from camp kitchens, in untrained hands an innocent looking batter can prove to be a dangerous thing...

A little over a year ago, one of our intrepid adventurers was observed to produce breakfast for the whole of his patrol. Stationed at one of our alter-fires, which is lifted off the ground to a sensible height the poor boy stood over an open fire for a little over two hours, fed most of the campers present and welded the left over batter to the poor unfortunate frying pan!

So this year it was the Beaver's who came up trumps by holding a pancake party for charity and raising over €150.00 in the process. Unfortunately their meeting is immediately before ours and the smell of yummy pancakes was just too much to bear...

Maybe next year we should re-instate our pancake production and follow Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's suggestion instead:
