Polly Congratulates Glenisk On Latest...

Early this afternoon I logged into my Facebook account to catch up with the world, his brother and sister and basically to have a good look around. Amongst the regular updates about Farmeville and the like (all of which I studiously ignore!) I came across the latest update from Glenisk.

Regular readers are no doubt aware that Glenisk is in fact one of my neighbours. In rural Ireland, if someone lives within a couple of miles as the crow flies, they are your neighbour and I am thrilled to have the pleasure of having watched the Cleary family from Newtown, Killeigh expand their business over the past three decades. Time after time I'm proud to say that this family business has been nominated for and received top awards and this week is no exception...

Glenisk is the overall winner of the SFA National Business Award 2010. Winning the Food & Drinks category, Glenisk also beat off competition from 35 other finalists to take the top prize. The award was presented to finance director, Gerard Cleary by An Taoiseach, Brian Cowen, TD, on Thursday, 4 March.

While we're on the subject of the latest from Glenisk, why not have a look at their new TV advert. Apparently, this was filmed in the middle of a particularly chilly December which meant that it wasn't practical to film au naturel, ie out on the farm. If you want to see how they did it head over here for more details...
So, congratulations to Vincent, Ger and all the lads over in Newtown! Keep up the good work and carry on bringing national and international awards back to our parish, making organics and sustainability hip, and the nation healthier...!

Happy Birthday Darling!

So, I slipped up. I've been told off by a number of my loyal fans (aka BJK!) that I haven't been writing my blog posts up recently. I'm not sure if they (she) will approve of this post, as it is my entry for the PaperPlay Challenge Blog this 27th week of the year.

The theme is to produce a card which is suitable for a male recipient, in this case take your pick! The slightly racy stamp hails from Bombshell Stamps. Coloured with a combination of Whispers Watercolour Markers, Sakura Gel pens and the new ink from Colourbox, ie Smooch in Gold Lamé, I think that this definitely hits the spot.

To say that thi is a departure from my usual style is something of an understatement!? Life is for living and taking risks; especially seeing as I decided to stay at home in celebration of The Phoenix Festival, I can probably be forgiven. You see I originally purchased this line of stamps with the express intention of selling temporary tattoos to festival goers...

Ah well...

Polly Plays Paper Challenges

Okay, so this week after a well earned rest from exercising my fingers I have managed to squeeze in a few minutes to enter another PaperPlay Challenge 09- Week 14. To be honest, I'd love to do this every week and I do have good intentions, it's just that life has this peculiar habit of getting in the way...

PaperPlay Challenges was set up by Sandie, who also runs the Midlands Craft Club (MCC for short). I prefer to use the full title, as some of my erstwhile friends would be happy to point out that the MCC is also short for Motor Cycle Club. This may have been more appropriate during my younger days, but sadly 'the beast' is resting up, in the same position it's been in for a little over fourteen or so years!

(for more info click on the pic)

Anyway, this week's challenge is set by Elisa ... "The challenge is complementary colours, that is, to use colours that are opposite to each other in the colour wheel , such as red/green, yellow/purple, orange/blue, etc. Elisa"

Purely by chance, or maybe not, I put together a special card for my good friend George. During the deluge drumming on the roof of my studio (aka garden shed) I consoled myself with pretty butterflies, flowers and ribbons for a special lady in his life - his Mam! It just so happens that when I looked up the colour wheel, which I really should consult more often, that the yellows and blues used on this card are on opposite sides, directly "opposite each other"

My PaperPlay Challenges 09 - Wk 14 Card

Hurray! At last, I remembered to scan the card in and it meets the criteria for another challenge. Isn't it a shame I forgot all about it last week when I might have won a prize for my efforts, still, the more the merrier, eh? Regardless, there are some lovely entries for this weeks challenge and hopefully mine will fit right in...

Maybe one of these days I'll be able to call on George for his excellent services as a business coach, let's face it folks, I need some help with my time management - don't I...?
Either that or a lotto win, so that I can afford to employ a house-keeper and spend all my time crafting...

Polly; Let The Tagged Alone!

Oh no~I've been tagged again! This time it's Donal over on TheGoodMoodFoodBlog . I suppose it serves me right as I seem to have been hogging his blogging all afternoon; yes that's right, all afternoon. The reason being very simple; I am obsessed by the pantomime and he's starring in the one I love...

Anyway one thing obviously led to another and hey presto I am to reveal seven little known facts about myself for public consumption. Actually I don't mind that bit too much, the problem is trying to think of folk I know who haven't already been tagged this time around or even the last time around! So; for the easy part!

  • 1) I speak with a very mixed up English accent - sorry to shatter any illusions folks! That is until really cross in which case a few of the colloquial profanities may be uttered in a slightly softer but more menacing accent!
  • 2) I am half Irish and a little less than half English, with some Scottish blood and heaven only knows what else coursing through my veins!
  • 3) My complexion is so sallow and my hair so dark that I am easily mistaken for a local when on holiday's/vacation abroad; whereas DG is paler than your average milk bottle with deep auburn hair! I have steel blue eyes.
  • 4) Despite the above I am not well travelled; preferring mostly to holiday around the islands of Ireland and the United Kingdom, usually camping in my own tent, cooking for four on a camping stove or meths burner. (finances dictate!)
  • 5) I have developed some very diverse reading habits which vary from short novella's and poetry to classics such as Dracula and Alice in Wonderland to the Avoca Book of Soups. I enjoy reading aloud to my children and anyone else who will listen.
  • 6) My taste in music is eclectic to say the least. My first concert was AC/DC at the Hammersmith Odeon and the most recent a Recorder Quartet Recital at a local hotel - I went to both voluntarily! I have met Lemmy from Motorhead.
  • 7) As a child I was very active. I won several medals and awards for both swimming and gymnastics - at (very) amateur level. Today I lead a sedentary life-style. I'm sad...

Now for the difficult bit! Who on earth am I to tag; without causing them to tear their hair out, that is?

Sorry girls; but I am sure you understand!

Polly's Arctic Bunny Suit

OOooh! There's so much to do and so little time to do it in. Last week in the run up to the half-term break I had visions of spending long hours in the house with the two boys finally rescuing it from the quagmire of accoutrement's built up over the years. Like all good magpie's we live in the middle of a pile of clutter which we simply cannot bear to part with; perhaps this is the reason for the various members of the crow family building their nests within spitting distance of the house...

What I wouldn't give for a visit from Aggie and Kim to de-clutter and deep clean all those hidden corner's for me! Meanwhile the fantasy continues in the form of a written contract binding my eldest dear son to my side for the whole of this week; in performing his various neglected chores - without protestation - our nest will soon be ready for decorating. Once this is done we'll be out of the CHAOS phase of our lives and he'll be able to invite his friends over. Hardy, ha, ha - LOL!

CHAOS is an acronym coined by Marla Cilley - otherwise known as Fly Lady. It represents that horror of horror that all teenager's are so prone to; which is the double standard of can't be bothered + won't be bothered but want my friends over too = Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome!

The news so far is poor. BB has finally completed the extra-delightful task of providing his pet ferret with a clean and warm environment for the winter; lucky thing! He was also persuaded to bring in fuel for the in the stove; LB was coerced into taking the ashes out and the result was that the fire was lit hours later than intended - at nearly 7.30pm!

Meanwhile, Mum; the intrepid Scouter was lounging on the sofa in the sitting room complaining of stomach cramps and abdominal tenderness. The kids have diagnosed appendicitis; personally I think it probably has more to do with the copious amounts of draught Guinness consumed at Ms T's hen party & Mr T's stag party on Saturday night.

That wouldn't have presented too much of a problem; except for the fact that by 1pm Sunday; I was on my way to Charleville Estate for a winter camp with the Scouts! Yes folks, it was -2C on Sunday night and we'd no running water or toilet facilities; let alone central heating or electric blankets to keep us warm...

It was about 1am when eventually my tired body decided to call it a night. My feet were warmish; so I was alright for the night! Mr B; in the adjacent tent was much the same as myself - only he took his socks off! I replaced mine with wool, angora and Lycra thermals purchased in Lidl on Thursday. In fact my whole body was swathed in fluffy bunny; I was lovely and warm - that is until I started to fall asleep...

By 4am I could tell that Ms M was awake; the rubbing noises coming from her double layered sleeping bags were a dead give-away. That was my opportunity to rustle my way quietly into the huge over sized bin liner called a survival bag; while she tip-toed out into the cold, cold field in her bare feet.

Happily my rustling had relieved one bladder and brought warmth to another pair of feet in the next tent; yes I'd also woken Mr B! As the two of them rustled their way into their respective space blankets I snacked as quietly as possible on a chocolate digestive biscuit to quell my rumbling tummy. Soon I luxuriated in a rosy glowing sensation; then sleep finally took over...

Would I do it again? The answer has to be a definite "Yes!" The kids had a great time; and yes they too were cold; although they got to snuggle into one another like kittens in a basket! It was an experience and it was fun. We'll all be better prepared for the conditions next time; ie I've already put a new four seasons sleeping bag on my list for Christmas - my existing one is as old as the hills and needs to be retired!

Next time we'll all remember to bring the magic ingredients for our supper and an extra layer of clothing for warmth; but hey we survived this camp and we'll be recovered from it by the time the kids go back to school!

Like I said, so much to do and so little time to do it! One thing I have noticed though; is that I am much tidier at home in the immediate aftermath of a camp; so much so that I was able to work at the kitchen table yesterday afternoon. Things are looking up; and even though yesterday was definitely a day for pj's and sweats, I got so much more done - just because I'd tidied the kitchen upon my return from our Arctic exploration...

I somehow doubt that my fantasy of being able to redecorate the house at the end of the half-term break will be realised. The week is already half gone; the rest of it filled with social engagements galore including breakfast BNI meetings; overnight ghost hunting at Charleville Castle on Halloween followed by a 50th birthday party...

At least the kitchen is tidier and my 'Appendicitis' symptoms should by well on the way to recovery by then; just in time for the next round!Meanwhile; we continue to live in a state of organised CHAOS. I continue to build my empire from the kitchen table and fantasize about paying someone to come in and do the rest for me!

Anyway, that's a quick overview of the past week from your favourite card making Scouter! I've got to go and ring Martin and confirm my participation in Friday's adventure now; wish us luck...

Championing Polly

In just a few day's LB will be competing in the Men's National Gynastics Championships; taking place at the Phoenix Gymnastics Club at the De La Salle College, Dundrum, Co Dublin starting at 11.00am on Sunday 25th of May. Meanwhile, LB and his young mates; representing LSG (Leonard's School of Gymnastics) are getting very excited. They only have one more training session to go now!

It was touch and go yesterday evening as he'd tripped and fallen during a game of footie with his friends at Cubs; thankfully our Cub Leader had applied ice and a crepe bandage.. The damage? A badly sprained knee!

This morning I anxiously sent him to school wearing a tubular bandage and with strict instructions that there was to be no football until Monday. I ran into an old friend at lunchtime; outside the school. We sat; for an hour and a half, catching up on things, reminiscing about old times. I spotted my little darling limping theatrically across the yard; no doubt for my benefit.

Within moments LB was spotted running after a ball; caught up in the excitement of the lunchtime match there was no sign of his 'injury' troubling him. At this stage of the game; I don't know whether to laugh or cry...

As LB is only ten years and five months old; I am pretty chuffed(yorkshire for absolutely delighted) with him and his gymnastic achievements to date, not least of which is because he's only been training for a little over eighteen months. His natural ability is a blessing; but at times it can be a curse.

Many of the skills he is learning now are having to be re-learned using the correct techniques! His enthusiasm is both catching and dangerous; which is why he needs proper training in a custom built facility locally.

Meanwhile; it will be a case of making sure that LB's leotard is clean and ready to go for the big day. I'm wondering if I should send him in shorts and a t-shirt on Friday? And I guess it's time for the dreaded hair cut and probably a much needed bath too...

Wish me LUCK!

Secure Polly...

Jean of The English Armchair Abroad left an interesting comment on my last post.

If, like most people, you have occasionally tried to book an excursion on the internet I should imagine that at some stage you have encountered a well known internet travel agency known as e-bookers. Like many people; I decided to use this company when booking my fortieth birthday present to myself - the famous trip to Spain.

I found the site very easy to use; in relation to booking the flights. I navigated my way through the various pages and was pleased with the results. The price was reasonable enough; affordable at least, and everything had gone better than expected, bearing in mind that this was my first time.

Hard Money Loans
Imagine my horror when; having gone ahead and booked the various hotels and a car rental for the week, I discovered that the credit card payment hadn't gone through and that I was being held to ransome by e-bookers. I had limited time to provide them with details of another credit card or they were going to cancel the booking.

"Fair enough..."; except for the fact that I had used my Mom's card to place the booking and there was no way she was maxed out! Eh-hmm! One investigative telephone call later revealed that there was actually no problem but that they had asked the offending travel company to ring for authorization on the card.

Hard Money Loans

This is another example of how careful the security services at credit card companies are; and I for one am thankful to them. The request for authorization had been sent to the travel company because Mom's credit card was being used in an uncharacteristic manner...

10/10 for Ulster Bank Credit Card Services and 0/10 for e-bookers

To cut a long story short; being a typical Aries; ie a bull in a china shop, I got cross with the travel company; whose attitude I deemed somewhat cavalier. I took my custom elsewhere; vowing never to return.

In doing so I discovered Club Travel; which turned out to be very much to our advantage. Club Travel charged me €1.00 less and managed to get us on a direct flight; which hadn't been offered to us previously. When we reached our destination we were tired from being up early; but at least we hadn't endured a five hour stop over en route!

We had a super holiday, we missed all the infamous Easter Break traffic at the airport and discovered the delights of Spanish public transport, deserted beaches and a heat wave in May! We even went skiing...

Imagine that; Skiing on Sunday morning; lounging on the beach Sunday afternoon! And no problems with my own bank as I had advised them of my intended spending pattern whilst on holiday...

Bye for now,

Polly Scams Hoaxers

Dear All!

Yet again it ismy sad responsibility to report that the scammer's are at it again. This time it's in the form of an innocent e-mail sent to my VINCA Cards e-mail address (vincacards at yahoo.co.uk - change at to @ to use this address) ...

Should you be unfortunate enough to receive something similar you may be tempted to explore; as I was. If you do, please be aware that I have Norton Internet Security which thankfully protected me from this obvious attempt at phishing and don't be tempted to enter any personal information.

If you are a valued customer of any banking institution and you receive a similar letter or e-mail, call into your local branch and tell them about your e-mail. Should there any confusion they will clear it up relatively quickly, but the one thing that they will never do is ask you to divulge details on line or over the phone.

Anyway, have a quick look below and see what you think. You might want to follow the link yourself; just to see what I'm on about, unfortunately you can't the link as it isn't live - I disabled it; just in case...

Out of interest I did click on the link and was transported to this sign in page, which looks pretty good. It even has a thing on how to protect yourself from Internet crime!

Just as I read this, Norton kicked in and saved the day; see below...

  2. Blog about it!
  3. Report it to the relevant authorities.
  4. Write to your local newspaper.
  5. Do not keep it to yourself! You might just save someone less fortunate than yourselves from being had...

A Series of Unfortunate Events - Final Chapter (Death Match Takes Place...)

Did you hear the one about the woman who purchased a brand spanking new top of the range dishwasher and then couldn’t use it because the fittings were different? Well, you have now! That’s me; I am the heroine in the final chapter of ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’.

Last Friday, I filled in a few of the blanks regarding the adventures of the family Peirce and their multiple disasters over the course of a week. Today, I propose to close the book on this episode of our lives; in the hope that we can get on in a trouble free manner from now on and well into the future.

Going back to the dishwasher; it is now plumbed into the space where my washing machine has always been, thus avoiding problems caused by the anti-flood system and its ginormous fittings. Seeing as it doesn’t have to pass through the carefully manufactured hole in the mass concrete wall dividing the kitchen from what we fondly call the ‘Scullery’, this is no longer a problem.

With the new dishwasher installed and working perfectly, my two bitches decided that they would embark upon yet another of their ferocious fights, right behind my back in the confined space of the scullery. I had been trying to re-programme the water softener, in the hopes of having even shinier glass ware. This task was abandoned rather suddenly as the girls snarled their way into the back of my legs and almost sent me flying.

What followed was ten minutes of terrified intervention between the objects of my affections and myself. I could and probably should stand back when these things happen and allow them to take their course. I don’t because I can’t. I take my chances and hope that I don’t get bitten; so far I have been lucky. Neither I nor my two bitches have suffered too greatly from their hormonally charged sparring matches; but it is exhausting physically and emotionally for us all.

Next evening the matter of the washing machine was tackled. For the best part of last week I was sans washing machine. The plumbing wasn’t long enough to traverse the famous whole in the wall; a matter of mere inches prevented the installation of the machine in its new position.

First evening DG took himself off to B&Q in search of extension pipes and found just what he was looking for. It was only when he went to fit them that he realised the real problem was the discharge pipe. The following evening he made a return visit to that great bastion of DIY and luckily found just what he was looking for; an extending discharge pipe for an automatic washing machine.

Evenings came and went; largely unsuccessfully. Appliances were pulled out; blocking the thoroughfare between the kitchen and the rest of the house, bits of pipe were cut off, water leaking everywhere and generally interfering with the smooth running of the household. Enough was enough! On Friday evening I demanded peace and quiet, without any excitement or water leakages…

While all of the above has been going on, it has actually been advantageous in some ways. Thankfully the washing was up to date, so this hasn't been too much of a worry and BJK looked after the boy's school uniforms for me. As a result the wedding stationary for my friend is coming along quite nicely.

I have been able to spend quite a bit of time out in my studio and/or on the computer; working on the wording. I've settled on of six informal layouts, four for the wedding itself and a couple for the evening reception.

I'm really concentrating on the design aspect of it now. Being very much aware of how people's taste varies, I have determined to offer a selection of modern & traditional designs which will hopefully suit everyone.

It's a great challenge; but it is just what I needed to get me right back into the middle of what I had originally planned to do; which is to make handmade greeting cards to sell, after all, I've got to pay for the dishwasher somehow, haven't I?

…Sunday afternoon: In the space of roughly thirty-five minutes DG removed the back of the washing machine, replaced the original hose with the B&Q extending version, put it all back together again and hey presto! Normal service is resumed…

I had almost forgotten how much I enjoy making cards...! LOL!

Take care!

Polly Px

Internet Recovery Therapy In The Approach To Christmas

Hi there, I'm backkk!

Goodness, it seems like such a long time since I was on the blog!

The whole idea of setting up a blog was to make a little cash from selling my cards. That was of course on my other blog Vinca's-A-Thinka! over on my Freewebs site, I can't actually remember quite when I started it all off as it seems like forever, rather than the few months it has been.

Being a total novice at all this I decided that I had to start somewhere and to be honest was much more comfortable with the degree of anonymity that the web offers. Seeing as I knew very little about web development I started to play on the Microsoft Office desk top publishing program and whipped up a few very amateur ideas to be thinking about.

Unfortunately, I also discovered some lovely templates on free-web hosting sites and blog sites. This now means that I end up devoting much of my time to designing and redesigning my sites. The actual blogging is relatively easy by comparison; assuming that you can find the time to do so in the first place!

This morning I decided to take the world by storm and tackle my mail boxes; considering that between them there was the best part of five hundred e-mails this is quite a time consuming past-time. My new friend Fly-Lady is responsible for at least a quarter of them, and this is after careful deletions of testimonials galore!

Don't get me wrong now. I am not accusing Fly Lady of nagging; or anything like that, but when your back is at you and the Fibro shoulder/neck pain has resulted in the consumption of pain killers galore; talk about housework is the last thing you need. That said, some of the testimonials are truly inspiring and despite my many complaints, we are still getting there; slowly!

Getting back to my commercial website; Vinca Cards, we haven't actually sold a single card - yet! There is a very good reason for this which is that I haven't yet to put one card up for sale! Yes, I know; that does sound a little odd. However, I decided that rather than jump right in with both feet and make a load of expensive mistakes, I would suss out my market.

I used the website as an opportunity to conduct market research into what my market was all about. I included a questionnaire's and a guest book asking for comments, a members forum and a comments section at the end of each post in my blog. Unfortunately my feedback hasn't been high in numbers, ie less than a thousand returned questionnaire's. However the less formal feed back, ie comments and remarks made has been very encouraging, much of which I have already put into action.

At the moment I am thinking about re-designing the layout of my website to offer my products for sale on-line. Of course this will involve the inclusion of a lot of modern cyber tecnology and the applation of a great deal of patience & common sense on my part.

What makes this transition difficult is the fact that the whole business of inter-net trading, blogging, etc, is just so new. To people who are working crazy hours outside of the home, then commuting large distances on top there is often little chance to familiarize themselves with the inner workings of their computers, and so; there is little common sense in this area.

Luckily, I am blessed with a number of contacts who are kind enough to share the benefits of their experiences, all of it free of charge. Unfortunately there are also those who are only too happy to charge ridiculous amounts for what is slightly outdated advice; packaging it differently and peddling it as the new answer to our prayers.

With so much going on in the blogosphere, it can be difficult to manage one's time. Maybe I should take a leaf out of Fly Lady's book and set my timer in an effort to control my surfing time? There are so many great sources of inspiration out there that it can be very difficult to self regulate and be self disciplined; I have met some lovely people, who have been willing to give so much of themselves.

I wonder if The Priory; our local treatment centre for a rehabilitation of addictions deals with addiction to the internet? If so, who would be prepared to pay for my treatment? After all, while I have been so busy on the net, who has been making the money out of my card business? The quick answer is no-one; which is why over the next couple of weeks I expect to see a turn around in the structure of my VINCA Cards website.

There are a number of people that I should be thankful to, not least Darina Loakman, Angela Willis, Yarrow Stark, Lynette Chandler, Kirsty T, Alice Seba & Kelly McCausey & Rich Shefren. More recently I have found just what I needed on the craft side of things with Chewing Paper, The Worsted Witch, Amy Peters, and several others who's url's & names seem to have disappeared into the annals of Google Bookmarks; which I am unable to access at the moment!

A word of caution, be careful regarding the bookmark button on the google or firefox tool bars, they are a great idea and very easy to use; unless for some reason the server is having problems, like mine seem to be at the moment. From this day forth I proclaim that I will be using my own favourites and cataloguing each address into an appropriate file. Hmmmh, that sounds like another days work!

Christmas is just around the corner now, and still I have great intentions. We have yet to bring home a tree, all our decorations are still in the attic and the presents bought so long ago need to be wrapped! On top of this, we must find the large living room; ie the one I started to renovate two years ago; our small house is too small for five of us to live for twenty-four hours in what used to be LB's bedroom!

It's not that my plans are particularly grandiose; rather I need urgent treatment for my internetproblems; they are beginning to impact on other areas of my life, to the point that I am quite adept at hiding my efforts. Unlike the alcoholic I can't hide it under the bath or in the hot-press; and yet still I try! Now, where is that timer, again...?

Good Morning, Good Morning!

Dear God, What on earth have I done to upset you today?

Welcome to the real word and the bemused rantings of the disparate housewife...

I dare say that from time to time most of us have uttered words to that effect; I most certainly have, as recently as this morning. DG was truly my knight in shining armour today, in so far as he took BB down to the village & the school bus. Such a small thing can have great impact on the life of Polly P, ie I get to doze for another few minutes under the luxuriously soft goose down quilt I got from Santa last Christmas.

Sometimes, however, such niceties unwittingly open the door to disaster. This morning, for instance, everything should have been going swimmingly well except we were running late; looking for the disappearing schoolbag. To make matters worse our lovely neighbours were in the process of moving cattle and had blocked the road for the duration.Thankfully Mrs MiF is one of the kindest of teachers and appeared to be quite forgiving of our situation, and LB did at least bring a healthy lunch to school!

Of course, were I a proper Mum this situation would simply not have occurred. The offending article would have been located the previous evening and packed accordingly; along with clean school uniform, underwear and shiny shoes. Unfortunately this is not the case in our house. Hopefully no-one noticed my nightgown; hanging beneath my inside-out cardigan, over my combats, or for that matter the fact that my dessert boots were trailing their laces behind me as I crossed the school yard...

Immediately upon my harried return I set about ransacking my own home; an act made necessary by the fact that I am no longer a domestic goddess, rather an exasperated wretch of a slob & layabout. Perhaps I exaggerate the extent of the disorganisation within the confines of my country cottage, but at times I do feel quite beyond despair.

Meanwhile; as a measure of my desperation urgent telephone calls were made to several unsuspecting innocents; firstly there was BJK - after all it's not unusual to be (loved by anyone...) down there of an evening, completing after school assignments [very posh phrase for homework] ,
next was the poor man at the Nissan dealership [my little black baby required serious fixing twice in the past week and is still on its hols there], then our lovely headmaster Mr HD; [who promised to check that the offending bag hadn't absconded to the classroom during the hols] and finally the poor beleaguered mother of LB's friend, [who wasn't in but got the OH to ring me back]. I'm out of breath after all that; phew, what a long sentence!

Needless to say there is a limit to anything, and soon I reached mine. Let's face it; two hours of ransacking the house over and over again is enough for anyone. It's well to tell that I am an amateur, as a professional burglar would have located said bag in less than three minutes; along with anything of value!

Anyway, feeling just a little crest fallen, at my failure to prepare my baby for school properly I decided that I should nourish my ailing body. LB had flatly refused to eat microwave porridge this morning, and so, in an effort to be frugal I reheated the sticky offering for myself.

Served up with a tablespoon of homemade strawberry syrup and a well deserved cuppa rosy lee (tea), all signs of self-reproval instantly vanished; it was delicious! Heartwarming & healt'y too, (around here we like to pronounce our T's wherever possible).

I then decided that I had a business to run and fought my way towards the computer at the end of the darkly strewn hallway. Having steadfastly ignored the rule that one should never take out more than one can comfortably put away in one hour; the house remains like a bombsite. Nevertheless, I was able to reach my destination with relative ease! Yeah, right...

With one flick of a switch I was transported to another world. The age of computer science really has changed the face of humanity; I had seventy four new e-mails awaiting delivery. Imagine the face of the poor postie, had he delivered as many snail mails, whatever about his legs straining under the sheer weight of it all!?

Bye y'all!

Wanted: Housekeeper in Rural Location

One of the joys of having a condition which renders me as not well is; that with the aid of medication to control the symptoms, I can honestly say that I have never been so happy.

For example BB; who was the victim of a freak accident on Monday, is at home with me this week. We mightn't be together all the time, we are within earshot of one another, should my presence be needed. In the past I used to hide my maternal anxieties under the armoured layer called a nurses uniform.

In these situations I was powerless; forced to surrender my nearest and dearest to my childminder/surrogate granny and pretend that everything was okay, when clearly it was anything but. That said, I couldn't commend Ellen more highly, if I tried. There could never, ever be anyone else quite like her; she truly is a wonderful person whose love and care nurtured my two boys like none other.

When I lost my usual income; ten months ago, life changed dramatically. All of a sudden, having previously delegated the daily care of BB & LB for the first twelve & nine years of their young lives; I became a full time mother! Oh boy; what a shock!

Being used to collecting the two boys at 6pm (on the dot!?); I found it difficult to adjust to missing those three hours. That short time gave me the opportunity to pretend I was Supermum; whisking around the house; like a dervish, putting right the things which I had neglected during the rest of the day.

Every now and again I used to cook for the madding crowds; rather Ellen would cater for the boys and BJK for me. In those days I was a most ungrateful child; I often used to complain in silence; occasionally out loud, about the menu, the committment of time, running to schedule, etc.

The cross examination that accompanied each wolfed meal was resented; leading to uneasy silences and evasive answers. As she regularly pulled teeth, BJK despaired of me; I was simply lacking sufficient energy to relive each day, for the sake of conversation.

I was irritated when the meal was late;it meant I would be late to collect the boys. In stark contrast to this BJK was somehow supposed to know on which days I would be late and cater accordingly; with grace! It was a losing battle for both of us; justified entirely by the fact that she needed someone to cater for; the obvious advantages for myself were blithely ignored.

Since then things have changed dramatically for us all. I will never forget the conversation with Ellen; her worst fears confirmed. So traumatised was she; that it took all of two to three hours before she was able to comprehend the fact that she was "loosing my boys."

The following day tearful conversations occurred; BJK moderating. We both expressed our regrets and heartfelt thanks. Without Ellen; I would not have achieved a half of what I have done over these past ten years. Come to mention it, the same should be said of BJK. Both of these amazing women have been mentors, and tormentors in turn; their support kept me sane.

These days my life has taken on some direction; I am in charge of what happens in my life. Others mightn't necessarily approve of things I have done; however, each will admit that I am managing superbly well.

Investments of time and money have been made and while it is early days yet, their support is guaranteed, regardless of who is taking the helm. I somehow squeeze into five and a half hours more household responsibility than I have ever faced.

As a housekeeper, I am hopeless. Hopeless maybe; happy definately. One of my dearest wishes for the future has always been to employ a lady; to keep house for me. No doubt it is one of those unrealistic frivolities; akin to the long awaited dishwasher. After its arrival in 2000; it stood in obeisance for years; awaiting an occasional load. It was little more than a white elephant; that is, until recently...

By happy coincidence, DG arrived at my door shortly before my income dried up. His long awaited introduction to the household; as a full time member, was unfortunately spoiled by the accompanying six and a half black bags FULL of dirty washing...!

Being not so young, but very much in love, I gritted my teeth and got on with it. I am still getting on with it and the loads of washing are slowly getting on with it too. Quite how I am supposed to catch up with all that needs to be done as well as be a full time 'wife' and mother, diy enthusiast, head gardener, chef extraordinaire and especially talented maker of greeting cards I do not know.

What I do know is that at the present time I would willingly open my arms, heart and home to anyone wishing to solve my inadequacy as a housekeeper, thus affording me the freedom to concentrate on my new career in making handmade greeting cards for sale to the public...

My Wish for ME

After my rather long winded ramble yesterday I thought I'd keep it short today. Please click on the link above (in the title) to view a blog by an on-line friend of mine; Celfyddydau. It is very short & sweet; definately succinct and really explains all of what I was saying about ME/FIBROMYALGIA/CFS yesterday.

The reason it is referred to as a SECRET is because we might look okay on the outside, but we are anything but on the inside. When people can't see an affliction they can be very cruel and apply labels; lazy being one of the most popular ones!

I promised to keep this one short and sweet, so I am off now! Please leave any comments on both my blog and Celfyddydau's blog as I am convinced that this photo will make a difference; if only it were part of an awareness campaign.

Thanks for looking,

Blog, blog, blog

Hi there!

You know;when I started blogging I had a number of reasons in mind;
  1. principally because I make (hand-crafted) greeting cards by hand; using a variety of techniques and welcome the chance to show them off;
  2. secondly because it gives me a chance to indulge another passion of mine, which is writing,
  3. I love photography and have really only started to be able to do what I have always longed to do, which is to take good photo's on a good camera. There's no point in having them if they don't get shown off from time to time!
The problem is that not everyone shares the same interests. This means that to some I am considered to be an eccentric; while to others I am considered to be quite normal.

I actually don't like the word normal because it infers that anything which lies outside of its parameters is abnormal. I personally consider that a better choice of wording is average.

--------------------------------------------

In terms of treating patients I cannot recall the many thousands of times when I have been asked "is it normal, nurse?" Most often they are enquiring about their pulse rate, temperature or their blood pressure. On the surface that is an easy question to answer; a simple yes or no would suffice; but, would it?

I have always considered that it is best to be truthful, while protecting the patient from startling facts which might upset them. It is a difficult question to answer, considering that there is no such thing as 'normal'!

Almost always I will answer, somewhat evasively, that it is what one would expect given their age, circumstances, etc., or that it is within expected parameters.

First of all I do not wish to be the person who eroneously informs the patient that in fact everything is not as it should be, or the person to tell the patient that everything is normal when in fact it isn't.

For most people the answers that I choose to give; when asked this question, is more than satisfactory. Only a very few want to know the intimate details of how their bodies fit into the parametres described as normal or anticipated.

I do not believe in telling lies, at least not intentionally. From time to time, like most people I might tell the occasional un-truth, generally due to misunderstanding or misinformation.

Unless I am having a bit of a laugh and playing a trick on someone I do not tell lies, it is not how I was raised and anyway, I can't do so for toffee! When there has been an element of deceit involved in some such plot; I will always apologize and offer an explaination myself to the recipient afterwards. I am normally forgiven quite readily.

-------------------------------------------

So far, the story to date is that I am a forty-something trained nurse; working in a specialised unit in an HSE Hospital, Somewhere in the Midlands. Due to ill-health I am taking a break to concentrate on the more important things in life, like my health and my family.

As an interest I started to make greeting cards and have been doing so for the past year. I have progressed so quickly in terms of skill and knowledge and am now able to sell my cards, for a reasonable cost.

During this time I have indulged my second passion which is photography. Since BJK gifted me a Canon Powershot digital camera have been enjoying including the occasional photo in my range of cards.

What I have discovered about myself is that while indulging my creativity my mental acuity has improved dramatically. I have good days and bad days, like most people; except my bad days really are bad days.

If I am short of sleep I suffer what can only be described as brain fog; a common complaint amongst the ME/Fibromyalgia/CFS community. On a good day, when I have remembered to take all my meds on time I feel like a million dollars. There is no consistency in my condition and I plan my life accordingly.

At last I am beginning to pace myself. In the past if I was a bit slow after a weekend off, it was probably due to copious amounts of alcohol and very little sleep for three days. Nowadays a glass or two of wine or not taking my tablets till late will have the same effect. If I forget to take my tablets I am doubled with pain, sometimes severe and other times so slight that I feel a bit like a junkie as I take my codeine; nothing else is effective.

I can no longer mash potatoes, so we have them boiled in their jackets. The skins carry the nutrients anyway. DG or BB will mash if they are around. My beloved Le Creuset Saucepan set is too heavy for me to lift without pain. Everyone knows not to get in the way if I am wielding it; from pillar to post and God help anyone that gets in the way as once in motion I cannot stop lest I drop it and its contents.

At other times my joints are so sore that I find it difficult to press down upon my rubber stamps, sometimes I have to do this while standing above the surface; generally my chair.

Sometimes I cannot stand up, either my back will not straighten itself out or I have pains in my legs or feet; sciatica just finishes me off. None of which is ideal for a busy nurse, in a busy unit...
I can no longer lie on my right hand side in bed and if I lay on my left DG snores into my ear and keeps me awake. I don't sleep well on my back and people with ME/Fibromyalgia/CFS are not supposed to sleep on their stomachs. My legs seize and ache if I lie in a foetal position and my left hip goes into spasm for days on end.

My arms, elbows and wrists ache and keep me awake if I curl them up toward me. My sleep is non-restorative and leaves me feeling like I have been run over by a steam roller. It used to be a lot worse.

If I take my tablets on time and in the right doses I do get some relief, and then I think I am Superwoman. I look around at the devastation around me and try not to feel guilty.

I tell myself that I am doing my best and that in anycase it doesn't really matter. The housework will still be here when the boys have left home, in a few years time. Anyway, Quentin Crisp declared that "after the first four years you don't notice the dust!"

I notice the difference and despite the family being supportive and wonderfully patient; it does appear that it is me, 'The Mammy' who is expected to make the difference.

After my huge energy expenditure at the weekend (during the five mile hike) it's important that I take it 'handy' this week; allowing myself the opportunity to recoup. If I don't I will end up putting myself back into a place I do not want to be in.

I don't find the need to justify myself, I understand my condition and the effect that it has had on me. http:Unfortunately people on the outside looking in are unable to see what I see. Apart from the fact that the black pits around my eyes are a thing of the past and the fact that I have put on a couple of stone in weight; I look just the same as ever.

My five mile hike was probably easier on my aching body than traipsing around the National Ploughing Championship showground. At least my body was moving at a reasonable and constant pace for most of the time, instead of dawdling along very slowly and still for extended periods of time while looking at exhibits and waiting for other people to turn up. My body isn't able for that kind of abuse and painkillers were taken as a matter of urgency.

Maybe because I had consumed the pain-killers in advance of the hike,I was able to survive it. On the up-hill climb I had been ready to call it a day more than once; my thighs' on fire; pelvis creaking & groaning, lungs gasping for breath as I heaved my aching body higher & higher up the mountainside. Our guides were very kind and slowed the pace to allow me to catch up. I've been catching up ever since...

-----------------------------------------------
I hate the way my body has been behaving and resent that my being able to do something normal is such a challenge for me. I am proud of my achievements, however, and am determined that nothing is going to stop me from making a success of this part of my life; not even my own lack of confidence!

ME/Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain condition with chronic fatigue. It changes lives for the worst in many cases and just occasionally it can change things for the better.

Before this thing really got its grips into me I barely saw my family, I was always at work or on call. On my days off I was so tired that I lacked the energy to talk. I was prone to outbursts of temper and simply didn't have the reserves to change things. I was over-tired and under-weight,in chronic pain, stressed out and not myself.

Now that my body has decided to make this stop I am a different person altogether. I love my family and most of the time enjoy spending time with them. I have two dogs, a rat, a cat and a ferret; only the cat was possible before - they're more self sufficient.

My boys most certainly would not be participating in things like the scouts and gymnastics and the teachers in the school wouldn't even know my face. I would be better off financially though.

I used to dream of the day when I could afford to go job sharing. That day would never come, as I knew that I would never be able to afford to do it. It's just as well that we none of us know what the future holds, isn't it?

By the way I forgot to mention that the fourth reason for my blog is that I can let off steam! The only problem is that I didn't think it would take up so much of my time...

Successful Business Woman

Since my eldest child; Biggest Boy started his secondary education at Tullamore College in August things at home have been dramatically calmer.

Littlest Boy appears to have found his own wings; he's started to 'fly' in school and appears to be finally settling into his own space; rather than in the shadow of BB. With very few exceptions homework has been tackled early & without trouble, rather than later. The whole pace of life has been that little bit slower.

Yes, the two boys still quarrel, from time to time they fight in the true sense of the word; ie physically; but all in all life has been so much nicer since the schools' reopened.

BB has fallen onto his feet and, despite an incident early on in the last month, seems happier and more settled. Most of the boys from his old school have gone to the supposedly more 'respectable' Christian Brother's; leaving my lad to get on and make his own way without any pressure.

Communications between BB & LB, myself & BB, LB & DG, etc have all improved and there is less disquiet in the house all round. I get one evening off a week; other than the weekends; and it is lovely.

Scouts on Monday, plus assorted requirements at weekends, Cubs on Tuesday, Gymnastics in Tullamore on Wednesday + Night-Class for me starting this week, Thursday - Recover from other three nights and on Friday Gymnastics in Curragh Camp Gym; for four hours!

This last weekend wasn't too bad. Unfortunately LB was unwell on Friday and so spared me the four hours waiting period on the Curragh; also the expense of coffees and buns in the Whitewater Centre, Newbridge!

Saturday I packed the two boys off to BJK for the day. I had an opening ceremony to attend at the new Scout Hostel up the mountains; aka The Slieve Blooms. I had to borrow a shirt and lend my camera to fellow scouter to record the grand affair.

Sunday; DG was suddenly working. LB had to stay with BJK again, while BB & I went on an early morning 5 mile hike with the scouts; 'up the mountains', over boglands and heath. It was jolly hard work; but at least the weather held off and none were injured. Afterwards we celebrated our success with ice-creams & tayto's!

------------------------------------------------

I recently read the Scouting Ireland Code of Good Practice. It's all above board and incredibly sensible;the thing is, that once having opened the first page; to reveal the table of contents, it makes me realise just how serious the business of interacting with other people's children is.

Within the HSE similar codes of good practice have applied, and sadly like most of my colleagues; I have been forced by society to view our charges with a slightly jaundiced eye. No longer can the teacher sit poor Sally on her knee to comfort her after a fall in the playground; no longer can we take photographs of our gymnastic hopes for the future and so on, and so on.

The application form for child members of the Scouting Ireland is very clever. In requesting the parent(s)/guardian(s) to sign that they give permission for their charges to participate in all scouting activities and to be photographed whilst doing so, such pressure is relieved.

It is a tragic shame that we can no longer enjoy the company of our children; without care or worry. Each act of kindness, while spontaneous and reciprocal has also to be weighed up; lest it be misinterpreted.

Often I have been threatened with a telephone call to Childline; reporting me for some imagined slight, and this by BB; my own offspring. I am afraid that such threats fall upon stony ground with me; as I generally offer to fetch him the telephone number. That somewhat defuses the situation.

We were lucky as children, we lived in an age of innocence. As adults we ventured out into the world, only to discover our naivety. Today it seems it is quite a different story. A little knowledge will protect our children from some of the evil that lies in wait.

Years ago we were expected to show a degree of respect 'for our elders and betters' and yet in a society which is so advanced respect appears to be a thing of the past.

The Scouting Ireland has contributed much to society during its one hundred years; it is one of the few remaining bastions of sanity. The boys and girls who grow up in the scouts are given a set of values based on respect for others; irrespective of their race, creed, colour or gender.

After a life time of caring for sick patients I now find myself in the strange position whereby I am one of the patients and no longer the carer. This is an unsettling situation to find oneself in and has been very difficult to come to terms with.

It has however given me opportunities that I would not have been able to avail of whilst working. First is the time I can now spend with the two boys, DG & BJK. I am much more relaxed and it seems that people actually like me now!

Secondly I am now making greeting cards; by hand and am enjoying the fact that I am doing something for other people to enjoy whilst enjoying it myself. In the near future things will look up for me and I will be a successful business woman, with an amazing & unique product that people can't wait to get their hands on!

Thirdly, through my relatively new involvement with Scouting Ireland I have an opportunity to give something back to the community; without making myself unwell. If I can pace myself, I'll be okay.

It is a great satisfaction to feel that the youngsters we deal with will hopefully have better things to do with their time than hang around street corners.

-----------------------------------------------------

The incident I referred to at the beginning was one of bullying. It was an unfortunate one off incident; which was dealt with efficiently, at the time by the school, who have been incredibly supportive since.

Some of the older boys; venture scouts, are also looking out for BB & helping him settle into his new school; which is a reflection of what scouting is all about.

The Incredible History of Computers in Tullamore, Co Offaly!

I am having one of those days again!

My mum; BJK considers me to be computer literate because I can play around with a couple of windows programmes and get results. Perseverence and an enquiring mind has proved helpful.

Since I decided to stop playing with drafts of my website http://freewebs.com/vincacards and actually get on and publish, she stands very much in awe of me and has taken great pleasure in directing her friends to hit it! There's nothing like personal recommendations.

During the time that it has taken to get this project off the ground both BJK & DG; my long suffering partner, have been incredibly supportive.
The only complaint is about the inordinate amount of time I am spending trawling the web in search of SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) tecniques.

BJK is probably right when she says I should be out in my studio making my beautiful hand-made greeting cards. That I need to be making some stock for when my next order comes in! Actually, she is right; if I get that phone-call tomorrow asking for replacement stock I am in going to be in trouble. All night sessions are not particularly good for my health!

The trouble I am finding is that there is so much information out there; just waiting to be tapped into. While I have found some really helpful stuff, I have also found a load of old rubbish! Also, we have to consider that my Mum is being extremely generous in her opinion of my IT (Information Tecnology) skills.

Just over twenty years ago, while still attending Secondary School in a large town in rural Ireland my parents financed extra lessons for me; as I was exempt from having to learn Gaeilge(Irish). The subject matter of those lessons? Typing. In 1983 I graduated; thanks to the tireless efforts of the dear, late Sr Mary Bridget with a certified touch typing speed of 60 mind blowing words per minute!

I remember well the topic of so many conversations being how computers were going to take over the world. What I also remember clearly is the disbelief I registered at the time; my only consolation I was not alone in my ignorance.

The highlight of the academic week at that time was when a handful of boys came down to our science lab to study Chemistry for the Leaving Certificate. Obviously the Christian Brothers (a catholic boys school) didn't have enough pupils to merit a chemistry class in their own school!

To be fair, the 'Brothers did have an Apple Computer with a lovely green screen which they allowed us; the girls from the Chemistry class to use. It was a fair exchange!

In those days such modern tecnology was used pretty much exclusively for playing computer games such as pakman or space-invaders!

Anyway, along with cardmaking, dinner making & housework; all of which have experienced neglect this week, I suppose I had better get back to the job in hand, which is SEO!
