Polly, The Smart Phone & Blogging - Or Not As The Case May Be!

I've had such a long break from posting I'm really struggling with how to get back into it. So, without any further angst I have simply jumped back in by typing the last two sentences! Wow, that wasn't so hard, was it? (Breathes a sigh of relief...)

I must apologize to anyone out there who has clicked back to this blog every now and again to see if I've finally posted. I do that with a number of blogs that I love and have been soooooooooh very disappointed to witness the sorry state of recurring absences. I must be a glutton for punishment, given the number of times I've done exactly that. Eventually like any sane person, I will give up as no doubt some of my regular readers have done in my case.

Personally speaking, I blame the advent of the Galaxy SII. I've always yearned for such a luxury, even in the days when luxuries of this type were only available in futuristic sci-fi movies. So, you can imagine how chuffed I was when my cell-phone (mobile) provider contacted me and offered me my hearts desire. Best of all, it didn't cost me a red-cent! Oh yes, I jumped at the offer.

That said, I grilled the poor girl on the other end of the line. I'd only upgrade if I could get an I-phone or something similar. In the end my choice was significantly reduced to the Samsung Galaxy II, due to the fact that it would support office! Guess what I did on Christmas day? Blah, blah, blah...

Anyway, the long and short of this post is that I wish to apologize for being a crappy blogger. I kind of got distracted. It's too easy to go surfing when you've got Wi-Fi and a hand held computer to facilitate. Waaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy toooooooooo easy! Oh yeah.

Sadly, one of the few things that isn't easy to do is blog from it. I know that countless others can do exactly that, however I can't. I find that the touch screen, even with SWYPE is just too hard on my hands to do much more than site hopping on the internet and writing the odd e-mail.

http://www.flylady.net/
Even the simple act of viewing my favourite blogs on a daily basis can become too much for my delicate little pingies. It's repetitive strain, you see?! Seriously though, that is exactly what it is; probably on account of the ridiculous number of favourite websites and blogs I like to trawl through at a time. For those of you in the know, I believe this may constitute something of a problem.

Addiction? Or not! Who's to know? One thing I can tell you is that my physician agrees that persons with Fibromyalgia tend to be more at risk of hurting themselves accidentally during the carrying out of their everyday lives. What does this have to do with posting though? Pretty much everything.

CHAOS! Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome is deadly. It can affect everyone, particularly those who are
not Born Organisers. In my case I've always been slightly disorganised, but since being unwell things have got slightly carried away when I was hiding beneath the bedcovers feeling sorry for myself.  This is due to an overwhelming lack of storage and the over bearing excess of belongings.

My computer desk has become a place to keep my neatly folded clothing. BTW I also store my shoes beneath it and two bolts of upholstery fabric beyond that! The nice thing is that I can admire them on the rare occasion I clear my desk and give myself access to my computer screen and keyboard.

The upholstery fabric is now residing on my sofa in the sitting room, fulfilling yet more dreams! One is a lush crimson coloured velveteen and the other is similar only it's a beautiful shade of creamy yellow with cream and red stripes through it. They compliment one another nicely and are the stuff that dreams are made of. They also frustrate me no end, considering that it must be all of nine years since my trip to Material World in Athlone. Still, one day...

Polly's A-Waffley Bad Blogger...!

Okay, so I'm a bad blogger! I haven't put pen to paper, metaphorically speaking for months on end. Perhaps this has something to do with my return to work back in May? Or maybe I've just lost the knack? Personally I think it's got more to do with my addiction to Facebook!

I tried tweeting for a while. Actually I quite enjoyed writing updates in 140 characters or less, in the beginning, but I soon got bored with it. Facebook is definitely my favourite form of micro-blogging. What I like about it is the fact that it's interactive, whereas blogging tends to attract the occasional remark - if you're lucky! Fair enough, maybe my copy should be more interesting and uplifting, surely if it were I'd get loads of remarks. Wouldn't I?

I don't know the answer to that one. What I do know is that if one neglects their blog, they sooner or later lose their readers. I mean, why on earth would anyone follow a blog that's not active? I know from personal experience that it's easy to lose interest if your favourite blogger doesn't blog - I won't mention any names, but the guilty will probably know exactly who they are! Anyway, enough of the waffle...

Speaking of which Lidl, the eponymous discount store ran a special on waffle makers a while ago. Seeing as I am a big fan of these light, fluffy batter confections I rushed home with one and eagerly made up my first batch. The result? Absolutely revolting, they ended up in the bin!

Luckily my now 13year old LB took matters into his own hands recently. Having demanded that I Google 'the perfect waffle recipe' a simple breakfast waffle was chosen from the Mr Breakfast.com site. As luck would have it the recipe was entitled Best Ever Waffles Ever and my kitchen turned happily into an impressionist version of the preverbial bombsite.

The inaugural waffle was dreadful. So much so that even the dogs turned their noses up at it! This was probably something to do with the fact that the recipe site had suggested the waffle maker wouldn't need to be oiled. I'd passed this information on without first checking the instruction booklet and true to form the first waffle had stuck, burnt to a crisp and failed to rise. Plus it was raw in the middle!

Having very carefully de-crisped the machine with a sharp knife (not to be recommended), placed some damp kitchen towel between the irons and steamed the mess off, LB tried again. Only this time he lightly oiled the irons...

Best Waffles Ever (5 servings)

  • 1 and 3/4 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 Tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 beaten egg yolks
  • 1 and 3/4 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 egg whites - beaten stiffly
Mix all dry ingredients. Combine yolks and milk. Stir into dry ingredients. Stir in oil and mix. GENTLY fold in beaten egg whites, do not over mix.

Pour about 1/2 cup at a time into waffle iron.

The result: wonderful! Well, nearly wonderful. Considering that my youngest chose to follow the recipe to the letter, using a small blue and white cup rather than a proper measuring cup, plus the fact that he beat the egg yolks and stirred in the whites it was a specially good attempt at making waffles.

Okay, the mistake with the eggs might have resulted in disaster, but, thankfullyt it didn't. So what if the resultant waffles were a little, well, flat! Served on their own they were delicious. Served with maple syrup they were divine. My only complaint? I'd to share them with the rest of the family...

Sadly there are no photos. This is due to the fact that Miss Piggy here ate them all before it was possible to get any shots in. Needless to say, LB's discovered a new family favourite and the fun hasn't stopped there and for some strange reason I seem to have put a few pounds on over the holiday season.

Polly Says Wanna Learn How To Quickly Put Together A WordPress Membership Site?

A lot of people have dreams of owning a membership site. It really isn't all that hard with the tools we have now compared to those we had only a few short years ago. But, that's not was scares most people. Most people are put off because they *think* it is very technical and they are also overwhelmed by the many moving parts of membership site.

Talk to those who already own membership sites and they will tell you. In the beginning it was all very intimidating for them too. But once they have the first one set up, the next one becomes easier because they know how to lay it all out and how things connect to each other.
What if you could get this blueprint from them? I'll tell you where to get it - TechBasedTraining.
They have a new training course out that walks you through the various steps of setting up WordPress as a membership site and they have also included a theme that can be used as a schematic to lay out the membership site in a manner that flows well and makes sense to your members. They really understand that part of the game is in a well designed membership experience. And the training helps you achieve that.
The best part, it is very affordable. In this day of over priced training products, this is certainly very refreshing. Don't let the low price fool you though. A lot of thought and work has been put in here so you get a solid training. Use it yourself or purchase a copy for your assistant. Details can be found at TechBasedTraining...

Polly Says Don't Touch The Animals...

It is important for all of us bloggers and serial commentators to remember that anything which is expressed on the internet is there for anyone to see, and what's more, it will be there ad infinitum. In a nutshell, this means that it is imperative that we keep our thinking caps on at all times, while using such a public medium.

Get Off My Meusli... (Beware Wild Things Bite!)

What truly scares me is the plethora of young internet/forum users who give out their names, ages and all kinds of personal details in places such as Bebo. One such person uses profanities at each and every opportunity given, and yet in the real world is one of the nicest, quietest people you could hope to bump into.

Another person, with whom I am barely acquainted boasts about how much they drink and their drunken antics on line, again they have a good background and many solid achievements to be proud of. In a world where employers are stooping to any means to determine which of the thousands of equally qualified candidates to employ for just one post, one has to ask if either of these lovely young people would even be considered. When their equally qualified peers from the same village have perfectly respectable profiles and walls up on the same forum who would you employ?

Another equally foolish example of misuse of social media is the Bebo page of a ten year old boy attending the local school. In it he give details of his whereabouts, likes and dislikes, etc. It is also clear that he hangs around with youngsters almost twice his age, whose social activities are anything but suitable for a child of his age. It makes my hair curl, scares me and revolts me all at the same time...

Should I intervene? Is it my place to be the moral, spiritual and everything else guardian of these kids? Does the fact that I've visited their Bebo pages make me the baddie? Or should their parents take them aside and explain to them that nothing is private or safe in the social media, unless done anonymously, and even then things can be traced back.

In my own defence, I must state that I encountered all three of these Bebo pages while searching for information on my own village, by name using the Google search facility. In response to my query Google threw up a fascinating gamut of information. This ranged from the Revenue Commissioner 's publication of tax defaulters to stories of garden parties held at the turn of the last century and drunken revellers being prosecuted by the areas most notorious alcoholic of all! And yes, I did feel a bit like a peeping Tom, but thankfully my own life is rich and satisfying, leaving me in the envious position of not having to live life *vicariously or through the eyes of others...

No-one's safe any time, any place!

I suppose the moral of the story is just "Be Careful!" As lovely as these photo's are, they are fairly typical of things biting back, not only did this New Forest Donkey break into my tent and steal my breakfast cereal, she broke the zipper on my tent!

*vi⋅car⋅i⋅ous

–adjective
1. performed, exercised, received, or suffered in place of another: vicarious punishment.
2. taking the place of another person or thing; acting or serving as a substitute.
3. felt or enjoyed through imagined participation in the experience of others: a vicarious thrill.
4. Physiology. noting or pertaining to a situation in which one organ performs part of the functions normally performed by another.

Cornish Harbour Freezes Over

Quite by accident I discovered this video clip; while looking out for a friend (Russell Rusky McQuillan) who has apparently had his blog linked to by the BBC. Unfortunately, as I have rather a lot of card making to do this evening I didn't have time to delve too deeply; but the Cornish Harbour Freezes Over headline did catch my eye...

Having only recently watched a number of nature programmes filmed in the Arctic circle the sight of frozen sea water comes as no great surprise; that is until you consider that Cornwall is located in the South West of England. As such Cornwall usually benefits from somewhat milder temperatures than much of the United Kingdom. For more information about this amazing occurrence click on the picture...

Having taken part in a number of "that's the way it used to be; when I were a lad!" style conversations recently, it should be no surprise then that only this morning we were talking about Jack Frost. Somehow, however, I'm not so sure that those cold and frosty mornings were quite that cold after all! Or maybe I just don't remember...?

Brrrhh!

Polly's Mind Cues

This post is a little thank you to the people who have been so kind and provided me with huge quanities of inspiration and encouragement. It is not often that you come across someone who is willing to give honest and reliable advice; but somehow I seem to have been lucky enough to have found some truly great critics...

Darina Loakman who introduced me to the concept of WHAM'ing and all the resources out there for people like me. Without her influence I certainly wouldn't be the confident blogger and website owner promoting my very own brand of handmade wedding stationary over at Vinca Cards!

Despite Fibromyalgia/ME; for several years I haven't checked myself into a nearby institution for the clinically bored and terminally insane! Thanks to the stimulation provided by the whole business of WHAM'ing, my memory is 100% better than it was a year ago and I am using my time constructively even while I am resting...

I have developed a keen interest in business from a pleasant past-time; with astounding results; having been forced to take a leave of absence from my profession as a health care worker. While my energy levels may not be what they could be; they are certainly much improved. I can do my weekly shopping with relative ease; which is largely due to a first class family doctor and an understanding consultant.

Jean, Lorna, Niamh, and so many others have put themselves out to answer my questions or send me messages on subjects that few would even show interest in. I even received a telephone call from a total stranger the other day; advising me to sort out my e-mail address as soon as possible.

All I could do was laugh the laugh of the embarrassed and agree with her - I had simply not got around to changing it to a dedicated e-mail address and let's face it; yahoo.co.uk doesn't sound as good as pollypierce@vincacards.com does it? I was thankful to her for being courageous and acting on her convictions. I just wish I'd thought about it before I re-vamped my business cards and placed my ad in the paper!

DG, the two boys and BJK have all been so supportive and patient with me. The house is a mess and unfortunately my good friends Fly Lady & The Household Helper haven't succeeded in converting me from slob to housekeeper just yet. Rome wasn't built in a day; I'm getting there and my family are right behind me...

What happens next is a mystery. I have resources and tools at my disposal to help me over the next hurdle; and an interest in business development. I hope to report back in another year that things have gone from strength to strength. This will take both time and money to achieve; but hopefully I am on the write (sic) track...

Damien Mulley, whose blog I have bookmarked is presenting the Irish Web Awards this evening at the Radisson SAS Royal Dublin Hotel and fair play to him! There's been a lot of work involved in this event and he's the man to do it...

In particular I'd like to wish Good Luck to Deborah Hadley and Darina Loakman; both members of IBW; both of whom has been nominated and shortlisted to the top five in a total of three categories. That is some achievement ladies; and I'm proud of you!

Elsewhere in Damien's blog I discovered this rather cynical take by Jonathan on the present state of the World Wide Economy. As commentator's have already mentioned it is succinct and to the point...

For those of you with delicate sensibilities; I apologise, however this is what the dog's on the street reckon and for once it seems that they agree with the experts...

Internet Recovery Therapy In The Approach To Christmas

Hi there, I'm backkk!

Goodness, it seems like such a long time since I was on the blog!

The whole idea of setting up a blog was to make a little cash from selling my cards. That was of course on my other blog Vinca's-A-Thinka! over on my Freewebs site, I can't actually remember quite when I started it all off as it seems like forever, rather than the few months it has been.

Being a total novice at all this I decided that I had to start somewhere and to be honest was much more comfortable with the degree of anonymity that the web offers. Seeing as I knew very little about web development I started to play on the Microsoft Office desk top publishing program and whipped up a few very amateur ideas to be thinking about.

Unfortunately, I also discovered some lovely templates on free-web hosting sites and blog sites. This now means that I end up devoting much of my time to designing and redesigning my sites. The actual blogging is relatively easy by comparison; assuming that you can find the time to do so in the first place!

This morning I decided to take the world by storm and tackle my mail boxes; considering that between them there was the best part of five hundred e-mails this is quite a time consuming past-time. My new friend Fly-Lady is responsible for at least a quarter of them, and this is after careful deletions of testimonials galore!

Don't get me wrong now. I am not accusing Fly Lady of nagging; or anything like that, but when your back is at you and the Fibro shoulder/neck pain has resulted in the consumption of pain killers galore; talk about housework is the last thing you need. That said, some of the testimonials are truly inspiring and despite my many complaints, we are still getting there; slowly!

Getting back to my commercial website; Vinca Cards, we haven't actually sold a single card - yet! There is a very good reason for this which is that I haven't yet to put one card up for sale! Yes, I know; that does sound a little odd. However, I decided that rather than jump right in with both feet and make a load of expensive mistakes, I would suss out my market.

I used the website as an opportunity to conduct market research into what my market was all about. I included a questionnaire's and a guest book asking for comments, a members forum and a comments section at the end of each post in my blog. Unfortunately my feedback hasn't been high in numbers, ie less than a thousand returned questionnaire's. However the less formal feed back, ie comments and remarks made has been very encouraging, much of which I have already put into action.

At the moment I am thinking about re-designing the layout of my website to offer my products for sale on-line. Of course this will involve the inclusion of a lot of modern cyber tecnology and the applation of a great deal of patience & common sense on my part.

What makes this transition difficult is the fact that the whole business of inter-net trading, blogging, etc, is just so new. To people who are working crazy hours outside of the home, then commuting large distances on top there is often little chance to familiarize themselves with the inner workings of their computers, and so; there is little common sense in this area.

Luckily, I am blessed with a number of contacts who are kind enough to share the benefits of their experiences, all of it free of charge. Unfortunately there are also those who are only too happy to charge ridiculous amounts for what is slightly outdated advice; packaging it differently and peddling it as the new answer to our prayers.

With so much going on in the blogosphere, it can be difficult to manage one's time. Maybe I should take a leaf out of Fly Lady's book and set my timer in an effort to control my surfing time? There are so many great sources of inspiration out there that it can be very difficult to self regulate and be self disciplined; I have met some lovely people, who have been willing to give so much of themselves.

I wonder if The Priory; our local treatment centre for a rehabilitation of addictions deals with addiction to the internet? If so, who would be prepared to pay for my treatment? After all, while I have been so busy on the net, who has been making the money out of my card business? The quick answer is no-one; which is why over the next couple of weeks I expect to see a turn around in the structure of my VINCA Cards website.

There are a number of people that I should be thankful to, not least Darina Loakman, Angela Willis, Yarrow Stark, Lynette Chandler, Kirsty T, Alice Seba & Kelly McCausey & Rich Shefren. More recently I have found just what I needed on the craft side of things with Chewing Paper, The Worsted Witch, Amy Peters, and several others who's url's & names seem to have disappeared into the annals of Google Bookmarks; which I am unable to access at the moment!

A word of caution, be careful regarding the bookmark button on the google or firefox tool bars, they are a great idea and very easy to use; unless for some reason the server is having problems, like mine seem to be at the moment. From this day forth I proclaim that I will be using my own favourites and cataloguing each address into an appropriate file. Hmmmh, that sounds like another days work!

Christmas is just around the corner now, and still I have great intentions. We have yet to bring home a tree, all our decorations are still in the attic and the presents bought so long ago need to be wrapped! On top of this, we must find the large living room; ie the one I started to renovate two years ago; our small house is too small for five of us to live for twenty-four hours in what used to be LB's bedroom!

It's not that my plans are particularly grandiose; rather I need urgent treatment for my internetproblems; they are beginning to impact on other areas of my life, to the point that I am quite adept at hiding my efforts. Unlike the alcoholic I can't hide it under the bath or in the hot-press; and yet still I try! Now, where is that timer, again...?

The Day Before - The Morning After!

This week has been the most peculiar week. Instead of our regular Scout meeting on Monday night; we had the annual AGM. This took place later & finished much earlier than our usual session. The result being that none of the parents wanted to put in too much work & I am now the Vice Chairperson of the 1st & 10th Tullamore Scouts. Hmmm!

Upon my return home; I then sat until the small wee hours of the morning making jewelery, ieearrings x 3 pairs, one long beaded necklace and a small bracelet. As LB wasn't prepared to part with any of his treasured possessions at the school bring and buy sale; it all came back to Mum! Oh, and Gran! In all honesty, it was nice to be able to contribute something for a change; as the past few years have seen this annual event come and go before I was eventually informed of it. Last year both of the boys were given money to spend by one of the teachers; €3.00 each?! If only someone had bothered to tell me about it, before the grand event had taken place...

Between us we managed to cobble together a few more bits and pieces. You know the sort of thing, a tea pot which is too big and doesn't strain the leaves, a pretty little rice bowl, some gorgeous 80's handbags reminiscent of big shoulders and hair and a lovely headscarf too. My mum also tried to give away some of my childhood treasures, only to have them confiscated by me! Of course, if they were that important they should go up to my house, which is only fair...

Otherwise Tuesday was a relatively uneventful day. The regular jaunt into town to drop LB off at his Cubs meeting was un-necessary as I had cleverly fixed up for the poor child to be dropped & collected by DG. This was sensibly used as an excuse to stock up the Christmas wine cellar, as DG arrived home with armfuls of festive cheer; bought at a reduced price in our local supermarket. Two of those bottles turned out to be my favourite Spanish wine, cleverly purchased at our local branch of Lidl; who just happen to have a good selection.

Wednesday: oh my goodness! Wednesday turned into the most peculiar of days; perhaps I ought to say nights! I found it difficult to motivate myself and get going. I had spent the previous night finishing off some of my famous Christmas cards, having already announced that they were pretty much sorted I decided that they weren't and so spent the majority of Tuesday night scrunched up in a ball putting the finishing touches to them.

is indeed a Anyway, by the time Wednesday morning came I was in agony! It really doesn't do for me to be in contortions on my bed, for any reason. My left hip and leg were complaining loudly while the opposite neck and shoulder joined in the chorus. Were it not for the fact that I had the scouts meeting in the evening I would have been in bed really early; still duty calls and a commitmentcommitment.

Blogger Held Hostage by OceanFree.net!

Yet again I have spent too long on the computer browsing through my e-mails and the internet. An overly large proportion of that time has been spent trying to connect; through various means to my e-mail account. Another fraction of this time was then spent trying to decipher what was what, and to fish out the rubbish. This morning I had 81 e-mails to sort through!

The other day, following the obvious collapse of OceanFree, my e-mail provider; I phoned their technical support line; only to discover that it is now out of service. In a fit of peak I then rang Esat/BT’s help-line only to be given another number for OceanFree, this was also no longer in service. This didn’t bode well; so dreading the worst I rang Esat/BT a third time, only this time I rang what is termed their residential help-line.

Success; at last! I connected with a very nice young man who informed me that the account was indeed very old and was being phased out. Apparently I should have received notification of this, in writing and; would you believe, e-mail! I haven’t. It was suggested that this proposed action could be responsible for my problems. Ultimately, my call was transferred to the relevant technical help desk where my predicament was swiftly resolved.

The techie whom I spoke to was very helpful, and exceptionally pleasant to deal with; while personable, his manner was professional and he obviously knew what he was talking about. First he enquired if it could be a line problem, then if perhaps a server problem and when all other possibilities were exhausted he informed me that there were indeed issues with my server; ie OceanFree and steps were being taken to resume normal service.

I was reassured by this techie that I would probably have to wait, at least twenty-four hours; but that normal service would be resumed because of this interruption! He even gave me an alternative way to access my mail during this close-out & stayed on the line while I tried it out. He very kindly talked me through, when I made a silly mistake with the URL: http://www.mail2web.com. All in all; his service left nothing to be desired and he has to have been one of the most helpful people I have had the pleasure of speaking to in a while.

Should you be unfortunate enough to have similar problems onto this URL; enter your e-mail account details and pass word, then pick up your mail. It will work from wherever you are, whichever server you use, from which ever computer you choose! I’m not sure what other services they supply, as I haven’t looked into it, but the good news is that collecting your e-mail is free of charge!

One thing I would suggest is that when writing down numbers and URL’s; do be sure to repeat it back & hopefully this will avoid any costly mistakes. Always check whether the number two is written in long or short hand, which was the mistake I made, which is easy to make. I always ask if the techie’s can stay on the line while I go through the relevant stages as it is always easier to keep them; once you have them than to have to ring up a second or even third time. Sure, it might cost a little bit more, but ultimately it will cost less in terms of time, frustration and money if the call has to be repeated in the event that the suggested reparatory work doesn’t work the first time.

I hope that no-one out there ever has to resort to doing what I did, but if so; I hope that this will be of some help. Incidentally, while I was able to pick up my messages on the mail2web.com site a lot of them were in html which to many, ie me; is indecipherable! The important messages came through okay, as did some spam!

After I had quickly whizzed through the incoming, I was able to delete at least forty messages prior to the remaining 81 being patched through to my account once service was resumed! The reason there were so many is because of a number of subscriptions to various sites, and bloggs; ie FlyLady, and google alerts for references to myself or my bloggs – after all; it pays to know that I am out there somewhere!

I’m going to get myself up and moving now, as I have a busy afternoon ahead of me.

Bye for now,

Polly Px
